we carved our imprints in the current

Just as water retains the memory of what has passed through it, the traces of those who came before us remain within us. We are changed by what we carry. We are changed by what we lose. We ebb and flow into cracks, filling empty spaces as we slowly reshape them over time. The slow, insistent pressure of experience against the self constantly sculpting new forms. Our imprints remain even as the current continues to flow.
